Some tips on what to try if Bedlam does not work correctly
on your particular PC configuration.

=====
SOUND
=====

Run the SETUP.EXE program on the CD to configure your
soundcard (amongst other things). After selecting the
sound option, you will be prompted for details of your cards
name, IRQ's and DMA buffers where relevant. We have not
included an Auto-Detect facility as these have been known
to trash peoples hard-disks and consequently are too
dangerous !

If you do not know what brand of card you have, you can
either select "NO SOUND" from the menu, or have a go at
figuring it out for yourself. From the DOS prompt, type
SET <cr> and see what is printed out. Look there for a
string that sounds like the card you may have. Any numbers
following this will refer to the IRQ settings for the card.

A typical example would be:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H6 P300 E620 T6

This is for an AWE32 Soundblaster

A220		Port 220
I5		IRQ 5
D1		DMA 1

If you cannot figure anything out, you can always try the
"SOUNDBLASTER COMPATIBLE" option. This will usually give
you some sounds in the game, albeit of a low quality.

If you are using the trial & error approach, the setup
program will doubtless crash if you have selected innapropriate
values. Keep trying but do not run the game with incorrect
settings else it will suffer the same fate as the setup
program. If you cannot hear the words "MIDDLE", "LEFT" and "RIGHT"
at the 'TEST GAME FX' stage, then select NOSOUND or retry.

VIDEO
=====

If the screen display is corrupt in some way, then the chances
are that your VESA driver is not up to the job. Many Drivers
(whether on chip or TSR) often claim to fully support VESA 1.2
whilst not actually doing so. Try the UNIVBE program on the CD
before re-running the game to see if this cures all ills, it
usually does. IF it does not, then there maybe a driver supplied
with the card itself (for those that do not have the driver
actually on a chip). Try this one out.

To install UNIVBE:

1)	Backup your config.sys and autoexec.bat files
2)	Find the install program for UNIVBE which is on the CD in the
	UNIVBE directory.
3)	Run the install program
4)	Follow the on-screen prompts.
5)	When saving, allow the program to modify the start-up files
6)	Possibly reboot the machine
7)	Try running Bedlam again in the usual way.

Please note that this is a shareware program, and should you use
it you will need to register it with Scitech software whose address
is to be found at the end of this file. If you are already in
possesion of a registered copy, you will not need to register it
again for use with this program.

If you are still having problems, then try running the game with
a command line argument of /NOSYNC. Some video cards do not
update the sync regiester, and will cause the game to hang up as
soon as something is displayed.

DIAMOND VIPER/VIPER PRO

This video card does not support double-buffered operation, so you
will need to specify a command-line argument to get the game to
run properly. The argument is /SINGLE eg.

	BEDLAM /SINGLE

Please note that due to the real-time nature of the mouse cursor, you
will notice display artifacts. These are unfortunately unavoidable.

MACH32/64 / IMAGINE 128

In some circumstances, these cards (and a few other more obscure ones)
will conflict with memory managers such as EMM386 and QEMM. If you
have one of these cards, you might need to exclude the video BIOS
area from the memory management. To do this, edit your CONFIG.SYS
file that is found in the root of your main hard-drive (C:\). Look
for a line that mentions QEMM or EMM386. You will need to append
the text "X=C000-CFFF" to it if not already there. A typical line
will look like this:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM

in this example, change it to

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM X=C000-CFFF

========
CD AUDIO
========

During the main part of the game, you should hear Audio tracks
being streamed directly in from CD. When the track ends, it should
loop. If this causes a large pause during the game, there is one
of two things you may want to do.

1) From the SETUP.EXE program, go to the CD settings and change it
to "DELAYED". This will only restart the CD when a game button is
pressed (such as a weapon selector), thus ensuring the pause only
happens when you are away from the action.

2) Turn it off !

=======
NETWORK
=======

Although Bedlam supports up to twelve players in a simultaneous game,
in reality fast machines and a good network are required to
play effectively with so many players. Using minimum spec machines,
greater than six players will start to slow the game down. A suite
of P90's should manage 8 or more players with ease.

Please note, due to the high-power, low-drag nature of the network
communications software employed, you may have one or two problems
connecting across a network router or hub. This is unavoidable so try
to keep the network games across machines that are all linked by no
more than one hub, or ideally none at all. This is not always the case
however, so the best advice is to try it and see.

=======
CRASHES
=======

If the game hangs up right near the start, run 'SETUP.EXE' from the CD and
try again.

I hope this information is of use and wish you many happy hours of BEDLAM
