Callahan's Crosstime Saloon CD-ROM Legend Entertainment Company
Version 1.0.0

Low Memory Problems
-------------------

If you receive warnings about low memory on your computer when you start
Callahan's, check the Troubleshooting section of the manual for help.
If you've only got 8MB RAM and you let your disk caching software
use part of that, then you're probably going to be low on memory. Try
disabling your disk cache software, or at least reduce its buffer size.

Type MEM /C /P at the DOS prompt to view programs loaded at startup by
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. For optimum performance, you should have
at least 6,000,000 bytes of Extended (XMS) or Expanded (EMS) memory
available, and 500,000 bytes of Conventional memory.

If you are able to get the game running but still have problems due to
low memory, you may want to disable animations (F7), disable music,
disable sound, and/or disable voice. See "Disabling Stuff" for more
information.

Windows 95 Compatibility
------------------------

Callahan's supports the autoplay capabilities of Microsoft Windows 95.
Installation should automatically be initiated when you insert the CD-ROM
into the drive and close the door. If Callahan's is not installed on
your computer, you will be prompted to specify various installation options.
If you start your machine with the Callahan's CD inside your CD-ROM drive,
you will need to double click on your CD-ROM icon.

<Alt-Tab>, <Alt-Esc>, and screen saver options are suspended while you play
Callahan's under Windows 95.

If you are experiencing performance problems that may be related to your
CD-ROM drive, experiment with the CD-ROM settings that Windows 95 has
selected. These settings may be changed after performing the following
actions to reach the Optimum Access Pattern submenu: press the Start
button; choose Settings; select Control Panel to bring up the Control
Panel window; select the System icon to bring up the System Properties
window; select the Performance tab; select the File System button; select
the CD-ROM tab.

Electronic mail and network messaging may interfere with the game's normal
operations, so you should disable them.

Windows 3.1 Compatibility
-------------------------

Callahan's is not designed to be installed or run from Microsoft
Windows 3.1. Install and run the game from DOS.

VESA Compatibility for Super VGA Users
--------------------------------------

Callahan's must be run with VESA Super VGA graphics support. If your
graphics card is not VESA compatible at the hardware level, then you will
need to load a VESA driver before running the game. If you do not have a
VESA driver for your card or you find that the driver that has been supplied
doesn't work, then call your manufacturer, or dial up their BBS or Compuserve
support forum and download a copy of their latest VESA driver. Most all
graphics card manufacturers will supply a VESA driver on a disk with their
graphics card if the card is not VESA compatible at the hardware level.
Those that don't will most likely have one available if you call.

Sound Cards
-----------

If you do not hear any sound or music when playing the game, check to make
sure that music, sound, and voices are enabled by selecting "Volume" from the
menu at the top of the screen. If they are enabled but you are still having
trouble hearing them, you may want to verify that you have selected the
proper sound card drivers by running the SETSOUND utility provided with the
game. (This is the same program you used during installation to select the
sound drivers.) Selecting different sound drivers may help. If it doesn't,
then try checking the speaker wires to make sure they are properly plugged in.

If you hear crackling in the sound under Windows 95, you should exit and run
the game again. This should clear up the problem. If the crackling reoccurs,
you may want to play the game under DOS mode or use your text editor to add
8BIT and 8DMA to the LEGEND.INI.

Disabling Stuff
---------------

To help diagnose performance problems and/or reduce memory requirements, the
following options are available:

- TO DISABLE MUSIC: while running SETSOUND.EXE, select "No MIDI music."

- TO DISABLE SOUND: while running SETSOUND.EXE, select "No digital audio."
Disabling sound will automatically disable voice and digital music.

- TO DISABLE VOICE: add VOICE=QUIET to the LEGEND.INI file using your text
  editor.

Undocumented Features
---------------------

There is a small number of handy features in Callahan's which are not available
via the game menu. These features and how you access them are listed below:

FEATURE DESCRIPTION
W Wait for one game turn (five minutes)
F7 Toggle game animations
Alt-C Saves the current screen to a file of the name SCREENxx.PCX.
Right-Click Cancel command, or scroll screen quickly (when in a scroll region
at the extreme edges of the screen).

Auto-Save
---------

Whenever you exit Callahan's, a file (AUTOSAVE.SAV) is created which saves your
current position in the game. The next time you start the game, this file will
be used to put you back in the game at the same place you were when you last
played.

Test Programs
-------------

To assist our customer support personnel, we have included several test
programs on the CD, in a subdirectory named \TEST.

PMEM attempts to allocate all available memory, then reports its results.
VTEST will test your video card's Super VGA capability and report its results.
QPLAYER tests your system's overall capabilities and performance.

Please consult your manual for customer support information if you need
additional help.

We hope you enjoy Callahan's Crosstime Saloon!
