                           Campaign & Campaign II
                           ----------------------

Empire wish to thank you for purchasing our Campaign product(s).

It has come to our attention that customers are experiencing various problems
when running the software under various system configurations. The following
information should help you to run Campaign or Campaign II with no problems.

Campaign & Campaign II both require a clear conventional memory environment to
run successfully. In many cases, problems can often be cured by using a
'Boot Disk' which disables many of the unnecessary memory resident programs.
Below are some suggestions on creating the ideal configuration for you system.
Firstly, it might be worth checking the current state of your memory. To do
this, type MEM at the DOS prompt. Make a note of the 'free conventional
memory', and the 'free expanded memory' You should be aiming to get as near to
600K of conventional memory as you can. Note - 1K is 1024 Bytes.

Creating a 'Boot Disk'
----------------------

1. If you have Microsoft Windows or any other graphical environment manager,
you will need to exit to the DOS prompt. Please note that the following
instructions refer to floppy drive A: & hard disk C: If your drive names
are different from these you should substitute all further references to
   A: & C:

2. In order to create a 'Boot Disk' you should have a high density disk ready
which you are happy to erase. Put this disk in your floppy drive & at the
   DOS prompt type the following:-

   A: <press Return>
   FORMAT A: /S " "

3. This should format the disk in the normal way & also transfer system files
to it. When asked to label the disk simply press <Return>.

Boot Disk Configuration
-----------------------

1. The files which configure your system are called CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT
Copy both of these files to your 'Boot Disk' by typing the following:-

   C: <press Return>
   CD\ " "
   COPY CONFIG.SYS A: " "
   COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT A: " "

2. To customize your system for Campaign (II) you will need to edit the above
   files. Start of by typing:-

   A: <press Return>
   EDIT CONFIG.SYS " "

3. This is the tricky bit...But don't get worried!
The Campaign software require the following drivers/programs that should
   appear in your CONFIG.SYS file:-

   HIMEM.SYS
EMM386.EXE (Or an alternative expanded memory manager)
   SETVER.EXE
MOUSE (The mouse may alternatively be located in AUTOEXEC.BAT)

The games do not need the following and can be deleted from the CONFIG.SYS
   file:-

   CD-ROM Drivers eg. MTMCDD.SYS
   ENHANCED GRAPHICS Drivers
   WINDOWS Drivers
   STACKS
   SHELL
   LASTDRIVE
   etc..

Save this new CONFIG.SYS over the one you previously copied to the floppy
disk. Note - Ensure you are saving to the floppy and not the hard disk.

4. While you are still in the editor program, open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file from
the floppy disk. If you're mouse driver is located in this file, leave it
there! You will be able to delete many of the other drivers/programs
listed in the AUTOEXEC.BAT . These could include:-

   CD-ROM Programs eg. MSCDEX.EXE
   SMARTDRV
   WINDOWS Programs
   DOSKEY
   PATH
   SET
   etc..

Save this new AUTOEXEC.BAT over the one you previously copied to the floppy
disk. Note - Ensure you are saving to the floppy and not the hard disk.

5. If you have DOS 6 then you will be able to use MemMaker to gain the optimum
   configuration for the boot disk.

Copy the MemMaker and accompanying files from DOS by typing the following:-

   C: <press Return>
   CD\DOS " "
   COPY MEMMAKER.EXE A: " "
   COPY CHKSTATE.SYS A: " "
   COPY EMM386.EXE A: " "
   COPY HIMEM.SYS A: " "
   COPY SIZER.EXE A: " "
   A: " "
   MEMMAKER " "

MemMaker may instruct you to 'eject all disks' when it needs to reset the
machine. BUT DON'T. Reason: You want to configure the floppy disk version
of the files only not the hard disk. Go on to step 7 below.

6. If you don't have DOS 6, then leave the boot disk in the drive and reset
   the machine.

7. Run Campaign (II) in the normal way.
