                     Thank you for playing
              FREDDY PHARKAS, FRONTIER PHARMACIST!

There are one or two things you should know before you play.
Actually more like three or four. Okay, seven.

1. Got a problem? Blame your hardware.

2. REQUIREMENTS FOR RUNNING & INSTALLING FPFP:

     A 286/16mhz MS-DOS compatible machine w/VGA or EGA display,
and a hard drive. We recommend at least a 386/16mhz or
     faster system.

A hard drive with approximately 11 megabytes of free space.

You will require at least this much free low memory:
583,680 bytes (570K) if you're using the INTERNAL SPEAKER for sound
     586,038 bytes (572.3 K) for non-DAC sound cards
589,000 bytes (575.2 K) for sound cards that play digitized samples
595,000 bytes (581K) for Pro Audio Spectrums

The more memory you have, the better the game will run! If you
want more memory/better performance, let the DOS INSTALL program
create a boot disk for you.

We also highly recommend a Microsoft-compatible mouse.

3. INSTALLING FREDDY PHARKAS (DOS ONLY): place Disk #1 in your disk
drive and type INSTALL. Follow the menus to choose your display, your
music device, your sound effects device, whether or not you want to
install the joystick, mouse, and extra memory drivers, and which
subdirectory you wish the game files to be written to.

Should you ever reconfigure your hardware and wish to change your
game settings, simply re-run INSTALL from your game directory. There
is no need to re-install the game from the original floppies unless you
have deleted drivers or done something similarly dangerous.

4. HOT SPOTS! FINALLY!! Each cursor has what's called a "hot spot."
This hot spot is the active portion of the cursor and can be used to
"aim" your action while you're playing. The icon bar cursors (boot,
hand, glasses, etc.) each have a SMALL RED DOT to show you where
the hot spot is. With the inventory item cursors, the "hot spot" will
not always be red, it may be another contrasting color. Pick your
favorite and tell us about it!

5. A NOTE ON MOUSE BUTTONS: The RIGHT MOUSE button can be used to skip
conversations or text. BUT BE CAREFUL; the text, including dialogue,
contains crucial information or clues.

6. ARCADE SEQUENCES: FRIEND OR FOE? A lot of people, especially
Communists, don't like arcade sequences. Should you want to bypass an
arcade sequence entirely, and you lack the cachungas to even play on
Easy mode, you can always hit the FAST FORWARD icon (the one that
looks like >>) as soon as the arcade sequence starts. That will speed
you past the rest of the sequence.

7. WINDOWS SETUP NOTES!! First: run in Windows if you must, but as
with many programs, there are tradeoffs. We prefer DOS; it enables us
to do some fancier stuff that Windows just doesn't permit.

Second, FREDDY PHARKAS will NOT run properly if you are running in a
24-bit mode (such as 64,000 color or 1.6 million color "true color"
mode). You will need to change your Windows setup to use a 256-color
Windows mode. (To do this: In Windows, click on the Windows Setup
icon, then select OPTIONS. Change the DISPLAY to use a 256-color
mode, then restart Windows.)

8. FOR EXPERTS ONLY! You can free up some minimal disk space by
removing the drivers that you're not using, ONCE YOU HAVE INSTALLED THE
GAME AND IT IS RUNNING CORRECTLY! Be sure you're getting the proper
sound and video before attempting anything this foolhardy! We
discourage you from proceeding unless you're 110% positive you know
what you're doing, and even then, we'd rather you didn't.

Here's what the various drivers are used for. You have our permission
to remove the ones you're not using. The gain will be small, and if
for any reason you change your hardware configuration, you will have to
dig out your original disks (the ones that should be stored in a
fireproof vault) and start all over again. You Have Been Warned.
