Shannara CD-ROM Legend Entertainment Company
Version 1.0.0 (703) 222-8515

Low Memory Problems
-------------------

If you receive warnings about low memory on your computer when you start
Shannara, check the Troubleshooting section of the manual for help.
If you've only got 4MB RAM and you let your disk caching software
use part of that, then you're probably going to be low on memory. Try
disabling your disk cache software, or at least reduce its buffer size.

Type MEM /C /P at the DOS prompt to view programs loaded at startup by
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. For optimum performance, you should have
at least 3,000,000 bytes of Extended (XMS) or Expanded (EMS) memory
available, and 560,000 bytes of Conventional memory.

Windows 95 Compatibility
------------------------

Shannara supports the autoplay capabilities of Microsoft Windows 95.
Installation should automatically be initiated when you insert the CD-ROM
into the drive and close the door. If Shannara is not installed on
your computer, you will be prompted to specify various installation options.
If you start your machine with Shannara inside your CD-ROM drive,
you will need to double click on your CD-ROM icon.

<Alt-Tab>, <Alt-Esc>, and screen saver options are suspended while you play
Shannara under Windows 95.

If you are experiencing performance problems that may be related to your
CD-ROM drive, experiment with the CD-ROM settings that Windows 95 has
selected. These settings may be changed after performing the following
actions to reach the Optimum Access Pattern submenu: press the Start
button; choose Settings; select Control Panel to bring up the Control
Panel window; select the System icon to bring up the System Properties
window; select the Performance tab; select the File System button; select
the CD-ROM tab.

Electronic mail and network messaging may interfere with the game's normal
operations, so you should disable them.

Windows 3.1 Compatibility
-------------------------

Shannara is not designed to be installed or run from Microsoft
Windows 3.1. Install and run the game from DOS.

VESA Compatibility for Super VGA Users
--------------------------------------

If you want to run the game with Super VGA graphics and your graphics card
is not VESA compatible at the hardware level, then you will need to load
a VESA driver before running the INSTALL program and the game. If you
do not have a VESA driver for your card or you find that the driver that
has been supplied doesn't work, then you have a few options:

  (1) Call your manufacturer or dial up their BBS or Compuserve
support forum and download a copy of their latest VESA driver.
Most all graphics card manufacturers will supply a VESA
driver on a disk with their graphics card if the card is not
VESA compatible at the hardware level. Those that don't will
most likely have one available if you call.

  (2) Use the SciTech UNIVBE version 5.1 universal VESA driver
supplied on this CD-ROM. To get up and running with UNIVBE,
change directories to the UNIVBE51 directory on the CD-ROM and
type INSTALL. Please note that this is a shareware product
produced by another company and will need to be registered
if you decide to use it beyond the trial period specified
during the installation of the driver software. Follow the
instructions on the screen during the UNIVBE installation
to register your copy. Please note that the UNIVBE driver
is NOT specifically required to play Mission Critical, and is
provided for the convenience of users who do not have
VESA compatible graphics boards or a working VESA driver.

Sound Cards
-----------

With Sound Blaster 16, AWE32, and other cards that provide an audio mixer,
we recommend setting the mixer to its default values (usually maximum for
voice, MIDI, and master volumes).

Chirping or Flapping During Voice and Sound Effect Playback
-----------------------------------------------------------

After a few hours of play, the Cardinal DSP16 and a limited number of other
Sound Blaster compatible cards exhibited a tendency to "chirp" while the
voices were played. This problem can be temporarily corrected by saving the
game, quitting, and restarting using the saved game.

Undocumented Troubleshooting Options
------------------------------------

There are several command line options that may assist you in
troubleshooting problems on your system. Options can be added to the
LEGEND.INI file in the directory where Shannara is installed
or added to the command line used to start the game.

8BIT
This option disables 16 bit sound effects and may assist users
experiencing problems with sound cards.

8DMA
This option disables 16 bit DMA usage and may assist users experiencing
problems with sound cards.

KEYBOARD=KEYBOARD
This option may help users who are having problems with the correct
functioning of their keyboard.

Creating a Boot Disk for CD-ROM -- Correction for 4 MB machines
---------------------------------------------------------------

Step 11 of the CD-ROM Boot disk instructions instructs you to insert 6 lines
of code. The lines as written in your printed manual are correct for 8 MB
machines only. If your computer has 4 MB of RAM, please note that you
MUST omit line 2. The instructions as written in the MANUAL.TXT file on
this disc are correct.

Test Programs
-------------

To assist our customer support personnel, we have included several test
programs on the CD, in a subdirectory named \TEST on the CD-ROM. PMEM attempts
to allocate all available memory, then reports its results. VTEST will
test your video card's Super VGA capability and report its results.
QPLAYER tests your system's overall capabilities and performance.

On-line Game Manual
-------------------

There is a file containing the text of the Game Manual in the root
directory of the game CD. It is entitled MANUAL.TXT
