1. IMPROVEMENTS TO SHERLOCK
   ------------------------

VIDEO PLAYER

There are new features for the video player that give you better control
over the scene. The controls are similar to that of a VCR's. Here's a brief
description of the video controls.

Replay - Starts playing from the beginning of the scene.

Play - Starts playing from where you are in the scene.

Pause - Pauses at the current frame. If you were already
			   paused, you will start playing.

Stop - Stops the video scene.

Shuttle Reverse - Shuttles the scene backwards.

Shuttle Forward - Shuttles the scene forwards.

Scroll Bar and Thumb - The thumbs position in the scroll bar shows you
where you currently are in the scene. Clicking
anywhere on the scroll bar will bring up that
frame and pause. If you hold the button down
the thumb will follow the cursor.

TRIAL

There are also improvements related to trying your case in court. The
judge has been digitized into a video scene so you can use all the new
features of the video player to understand exactly what he is asking. If
you are asked to name a person or place, use your directory or notebook to
choose one. When you feel you have the right choice, click on the "Confirm
Answer" icon. Multiple choice questions work about the same. Choose the
correct answer, then click on "Confirm Answer" icon.

FORCE SOUND CARD COMPATIBILITY

To force Sherlock Holmes to look for only one particular sound card,
insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

     SET ICOMSND=xx

substituting 'xx' with a number from the following table:

0 - Microsoft Windows Sound System
1 - Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum
2 - Creative Labs Sound Blaster
     3 - AdLib Gold
     4 - Tandy Sensation
5 - COVOX Sound Master II

MICROSOFT WINDOWS SOUND SYSTEM NOTES

Sherlock Holmes will use hardware on the Microsoft WINDOWS Sound System
board to detect a free IRQ channel to use. The environment variable "MSIRQ"
lets you bypass the auto-detection and set it to a channel of you choosing.

Insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to set the IRQ channel:

SET MSIRQ=xx

substituting 'xx' with a valid IRQ channel number. Four IRQ channels
are usable if the card is in an 16-bit slot (7, 9, 10, and 11) and
two if it's in an 8-bit slot (7 and 9).

There is no detection hardware for the DMA channel and Sherlock defaults
to DMA channel one. If you want to change it to another channel use the
environment variable "MSDMA".

Insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to set the DMA channel:

SET MSDMA=xx

substituting 'xx' with a valid DMA channel number. The board can be set to
one of three DMA channels if the card is in an 16-bit slot (0, 1, 3) and
two if it's in an 8-bit slot (1 and 3).

COVOX SOUND MASTER II SOUND BOARD NOTES

Sherlock Holmes has no means to detect the COVOX Sound Master II sound
board directly. We have provided three environment variables
(SMIIPORT, SMIIDMA and SMIIIRQ) you can set to tell Sherlock at what port,
DMA channel and IRQ channel your board is set to.

Insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to set the boards port:

SET SMIIPORT=xxx

substituting 'xxx' with a valid port address. The board can be set to one
of four addresses (220, 240, 280, and 2C0). This environment variable must
be set for Sherlock to find the board.

Sherlock assumes the board is set to DMA channel 1. If your board is set to
something different, insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
to set the DMA channel:

SET SMIIDMA=xx

substituting 'xx' with a valid DMA channel number. The board can be set to
one of two channels (1 or 3).

Sherlock assumes the board is set to IRQ channel 5. If your board is set to
something different, insert the following line into the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
to set the IRQ channel:

SET SMIIIRQ=xx

substituting 'xx' with a valid IRQ channel number. The board can be set to
one of four channels (2, 3, 5, or 7).

VOLUME CONTROL

By pressing the CTRL and <Page-Up> or <Page-Down> keys simultaneously,
you will be able to increase or decrease (respectively) the volume while
playing Sherlock Holmes.

SCORING

Pertinent Travel Clues = 7 points
Travel (All other clues) = 10 Points
Holmes Files = 1 Point
Baker Street Irregulars = 5 points
Red Herrings (Travel) = 20 points
Red Herrings (BS Irreg.) = 10 points

A "Pertinent Travel Clue" is one of the essential clues that you must
see to be able to solve the case and visit the judge. The number of these
clues vary depending the mystery.

All other video sequences which contains clues (although not essential
clues) are considered "Travel."

If you use "Holmes' Files" you will have a point added to your score for
each time you access the files.

Whenever you send the Baker Street Irregulars to visit an area with a
clue, five points will be added to your score.

Sending Holmes/Watson to visit a dead end, or red herring, will add
twenty points to your score. A red herring occurs when there are no clues
to be found at a location, and Holmes/Watson are "wasting their time." A
brief video clip or illustration will inform you that you have come to a
dead end.

Sending the Baker Street Irregulars to visit a dead end, a red herring,
will add ten points to your score. The Baker Street Irregulars will send
a telegram stating they could not find out any information at the
person/location they were sent to if it was a red herring.

3. COMPATIBILITY & SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
   -----------------------------------

MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Please note that Sherlock Holmes is a DOS-based program. It is not meant
to be run through Microsoft Windows, and problems may occur when doing so
that would otherwise never occur. In addition, Windows places major demands
on your machine's processing power, even when running in the background,
which can cause frequent pauses in the video sequences. We strongly urge
you to "Exit" Windows to a DOS Prompt when playing Sherlock Holmes (as
opposed to setting up an icon in Windows or running the "DOS Prompt") in
order to prevent any unnecessary difficulty and to optimize your machine's
performance.

CD-ROM DRIVE REQUIREMENTS

Sherlock Holmes, Consulting Detective requires a CD-ROM drive that meets
or exceeds the following requirements:
   - 150 KB/sec transfer rate of continuous-read data
   - average seek time of approximately 380-400 milliseconds (ms)

MEMORY REQUIREMENTS

   - 520K free conventional memory

KNOWN COMPATIBLE VIDEO CARDS/CHIPSETS

The following video cards/chipsets have been tested with Sherlock
Holmes:

  Make/Model Chipset
  --------------------- -------------------
  ATI VGA Wonder ATI

INCOMPATIBLE CD-ROM DRIVES

The following drives cannot be made to work with Sherlock Holmes due to
hardware reasons:

  Make Model
  --------------- -------------------
  NEC 25*, 35, 36, 36M*, 37*

* These drives work sporadically. Depending on the manufacturing quality,
you may be able to use these drives with Sherlock. However, most will
display frequent error messages (See Q&A section, "READ ERROR").

MARGINAL CD-ROM DRIVES

The following drives can be made to work with Sherlock Holmes, but may
require hardware or software updates. In addition, extensive RAM buffering
may also be necessary:

  Make Model
  --------------- -------------------
  Chinon CDA-431
  Magnavox CDD-461
  Pioneer DRM-600 (6-disc Jukebox drive)
  Tandy CDR-1000

4. CD-ROM BOOT DISK
   ----------------

A CD-ROM Boot Disk is a system disk that contains the minimal amount of
system software to start a machine with a CD-ROM drive attached. If you are
having difficulty playing the game, or cannot free the conventional memory
required to load the program, we strongly recommend that you create a "CD-
ROM Boot disk" as described below. Tandy Sensation users may run the
SENBOOT program at the CD-ROM DOS prompt to create a CD-ROM Boot disk
automatically.

In order to create a system disk, you'll need to format a disk in your
A: drive using the "/s" command. From a DOS Prompt you would type:

FORMAT A:/S

This will erase whatever data is on the disk in your A: drive and copy
the essential system files automatically.

Next, you should copy the "CONFIG.SYS" and "AUTOEXEC.BAT" files on your
hard drive to the A: drive. From a DOS Prompt you would type:

COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS A:\CONFIG.SYS
COPY C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

Next, you'll need to use a text editor or word processor to modify these
two files on your A: disk (The CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files). You can
use whatever program you feel most comfortable with, but you'll need to be
certain to save the files out as TEXT files and not in the word processor's
or text editor's proprietary format. From within Microsoft Word, for
example, you need to select "Save as..." instead of "Save" and choose
"Text" as the format.

The files should come as close as possible to matching the sample
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files that we list below. Depending on your
hardware setup, the filenames will differ from what we list, so do not be
alarmed if you can't find the specific line that's shown.

The "path" to the files will vary depending on your particular machine's
setup, so do not modify the lines unless necessary. If you move a file from
your hard drive onto the boot disk, then you would need to edit the path
portion of the affected line(s) to reflect it's new location and/or name.
Normally this is not necessary if you leave the path and filenames in their
original state.

Sample CONFIG.SYS

  FILES=30
  BUFFERS=30
  STACKS=9,256
  DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
  DOS=HIGH
  DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
  DEVICE=C:\CD\SBPCD.SYS /D:MSCD001 /P:220
  DEVICE=C:\MOUSE\MMOUSE.SYS

Explanation of the above:

The first line "FILES=30" sets up a DOS environment variable which sets
the maximum number of open files.

The second line, "BUFFERS=30" sets up a DOS environment variable which
sets aside a portion of memory for caching data off any DOS drive.

The third line, "STACKS=9,256" sets up a DOS environment variable which
will put aside a portion of memory for a table which is used by some DOS
TSRs and device drivers. In no case should you use the command STACKS=0,0.

The fourth line, HIMEM.SYS, loads the "High Memory manager" which
allows DOS 5.0 and DR-DOS 6.0 users to load DOS into the High Memory
area, freeing up more conventional memory for use by DOS programs. *

The fifth line, DOS=HIGH, tells DOS to load into the High Memory area. *

The sixth line, SETVER, loads "SetVersion", a driver which tricks a
program into thinking that you are using an earlier version of DOS. If
you're using MSCDEX 2.20 and DOS 5.0, you'll need to load SETVER.

The seventh line, SBPCD, loads Creative Lab's Sound Blaster CD-ROM
driver into memory. **

The eighth line, MMOUSE, loads a Microsoft Mouse driver into memory. **

* Note: MS-DOS 4.x and 3.x users cannot load DOS high and these lines do
not apply. To check your DOS version, type "ver" from a DOS Prompt.
** Note: These two lines will always vary depending on what brand of
hardware you have in your machine. Each CD-ROM drive and mouse have their
own particular filenames for their drivers.

Sample AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  @ECHO OFF
  PROMPT $P$G
  PATH=C:\DOS;C:\
  SET BLASTER=A220 I10 D3 T6
  C:\CD\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001

The first line, ECHO OFF, stops DOS from echoing the contents of your
AUTOEXEC.BAT to the screen.

The second line, SET BLASTER, sets a DOS environment variable which
allows programs to know how your Sound Blaster card is configured. If you
are not using a Sound Blaster card or a SB-compatible card, then this line
is not needed. This line will vary depending on the type of card you have
installed and how it's configured. A220 I10 D3 T6 means the Sound Blaster
is at Address 220, Interrupt (IRQ) 10, DMA Channel 3, and is "type" 6 (6th
revision). If you ever change settings on a SB-compatible card, you will
need to modify this line to reflect the changes.

The third line, PATH, sets up the areas that DOS will look when you
type in a filename at the command prompt. This should be left "as is"
from your existing AUTOEXEC.BAT.

The fourth line, PROMPT, sets up the command prompt's "formatting".

The fifth line, MSCDEX, loads Microsoft's CD Extension into memory. The
"/D:MSCD001" will vary depending on your CD-ROM drive, do not modify that
portion. *

* If you need to set up "buffering" for your CD-ROM drive, add the
command "/M:xx" where xx is the number of 2K pages you wish to have set
aside for a buffer. We recommend starting with /M:15 and slowly increasing
the number if you still have difficulty.

We recommend that users using hardware/software hard drive compression
methods, such as STACker or SuperStor, do not load their compression
drivers on this Boot Disk. We suggest that you copy the necessary files
off the compressed drive and onto the boot disk. Then rewrite the
CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT to reflect the new "path" to the files. The
files will then load off the floppy at startup, eliminating the need to
load the compression drivers. However, this will make any compressed drives
inaccessable.

We also recommend that users do not load Expanded Memory Managers (EMM)
such as EMM386, QEMM, and 386MAX. Depending on how you have these
configured, they can slow your machine's processing power by 25-40%, as
well as attempting to free reserved portions of your machine's RAM for use
as expanded memory or an Upper Memory Block. The latter will cause some
machines to become extremely unstable, which causes it to crash for an
invalid reason. Since Sherlock Holmes does not use expanded memory, we
recommend not loading an EMM for the above reasons.

5. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
   -------------------

Q. I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FREE MEMORY TO PLAY SHERLOCK.

A. Sherlock requires approx. 520K of free conventional memory to load
the program. Solution: Free the amount needed by removing any
unnecessary device drivers/TSRs from memory. Or, create a CD-ROM
    boot disk.

Q. I GET THE MESSAGE "COULD NOT INITIALIZE MOUSE."

A. Make sure that the mouse is connected and that a DOS-level mouse driver
is loading in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. Read your mouse's users
manual for directions on how to load a mouse driver for DOS programs.

Q. I GET THE MESSAGE "COULD NOT FIND COMPATIBLE SOUND CARD."

A. Possibility 1. The sound card is set to an Interrupt that is already
in use by another part of your machine's hardware. The most common
conflict occurs on Interrupt 7, which is the default on Sound Blaster
cards. IRQ7 is reserved by some machine's BIOS' for LPT1 (The 1st
printer/parallel port). Solution: Set the sound card to use another
Interrupt. Check your sound card's users manual for the method of
changing IRQ's for your particular card.

Possibility 2. The sound card is set to a non-standard IRQ channel.
Solution: Change the setting to Sound Blaster IRQ setting (2/3/5/7).

Possibility 3. If you are using a Sound Blaster or compatible sound
card, the "SET BLASTER" line is missing in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. This
line tells a DOS program what settings your sound card is set to, and
is normally created when you install the card's drivers onto your hard
drive. Solution: Re-install or install the drivers for your sound card
according to the directions in the manual, or write a SET BLASTER line
yourself based on the card's settings. For a description of the SET
BLASTER line, see the sample AUTOEXEC.BAT.

Possibility 4. If you are using PAS16/PAS Plus cards (Pro Audio
Spectrum 16), the device driver loaded to enable the PAS
portion of the card may be using the same IRQ and DMA that the Sound
Blaster portion is currently using. Solution: Change the settings of
the MVSOUND.SYS driver to IRQ 7 and DMA 3 or any other available
setting. IRQ 5 and DMA 1 cannot be used because it is already used by
by default for the Sound Blaster portion of the card.

Possibility 5. You are using an incompatible sound card or do not
have a sound card installed. Solution: Sherlock requires one of the
following 100% compatible sound cards in order to play.

	- AdLib Gold - Creative Labs Sound Blaster
	- Covox - MediaVision Pro Audio Spectrum
	- Tandy Sensation - Microsoft Windows Sound System

Q. MY SYSTEM IS LOCKING OR CRASHING AT, BEFORE, OR DURING THE TITLE
    SCREEN.

Sherlock will not work with the buffered DMA setting
on the ATI Stereo FX card. Solution: Disable the "Buffer DMA Play"
    setting using ATI's setup program.

Possibility 3. The Sound Blaster card is set to a non-standard or
conflicting DMA channel. Try selecting a different DMA channel.

Possibility 4. Sherlock is receiving device driver interference. Other
drivers may be using processor time, attempting to screen incoming data
for viruses, tracking system activity, etc. Solution: Create a CD-ROM
    boot disk.

Possibility 5. Your sound card has an option for "DMA Sharing", which
is an option on some PC's to allow two cards to share one DMA Channel.
Some machines do not support this option, and having this option
enabled on a PC which does not support it will cause the machine to
freeze when using the sound card's DMA. Solution: Disable this option
for your sound card. The Pro Audio Spectrum-16 and Sound Blaster Pro
(Revision 6 or greater) are popular cards which have this jumper. Refer
to your sound card user's manual for directions on changing the DMA
    Sharing jumper.

Possibility 6. If you use a Pro Audio Spectrum Plus card, make certain
that the "SB_ON" file is not loading in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This
is not required for Sherlock Holmes to use your sound card. Solution:
Remove this line from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and restart your machine.

Q. WHEN I MOVE THE MOUSE, MY MACHINE LOCKS UP.

A. If you're mouse is using the same IRQ as your sound card or CD-ROM
drive, the interrupt conflict will cause the machine to lock up at the
time the mouse is moved. Solution: Change the IRQ's so that each
device has its own unique interrupt. See the manual of either your
mouse, sound card or CD-ROM drive for instructions on changing
    the IRQ's.

Q. WHEN I TRY TO ENTER A VIDEO SEQUENCE, MY MACHINE FREEZES.

Sherlock is receiving device driver interference or
other drivers may be using processor time, attempting to screen
incoming data for viruses, tracking system activity, etc. Solution:
    Create a CD-ROM boot disk.

Possibility 3.
Refer to your sound card user's manual for directions on changing the
    DMA Sharing jumper.

Q. THE PROGRAM'S SOUND AND MOTION HESITATE MOMENTARILY. WHY?

A. Possibility 1. There is device driver interference with data transfer
from CD-ROM. Solution: Create a CD-ROM boot disk.

Possibility 2. The CD-ROM drive or its device driver cannot keep up
with the demands placed upon it by Sherlock. Solution: Check with the
manufacturer of your CD-ROM drive or interface for a software or
    hardware update.

Possibility 3. If you load another Expanded Memory Manager (EMM) such
as EMM386, QEMM, or 386MAX, you may experience problems because your
machine is too slow when an EMM is loaded. With an EMM running, your
machine is approximately 25-40% slower, which can affect Sherlock.
Solution: Disable or remove the EMM from the CONFIG.SYS when playing
    Sherlock Holmes.

Q. I DONT GET SOUND WHEN THE VIDEO IS PLAYING.

A. If any device is sharing the DMA channel with the sound card, you
will not hear any audio. Solution: See your manual for instructions
on changing the DMA for any device that conflicts with DMA on the
    sound card.

Q. THE QUALITY OF THE AUDIO IS VERY POOR. IT ALMOST SOUNDS LIKE THEY'RE
    TALKING UNDERWATER!

A. If you load EMM386, QEMM, 386MAX, or another Expanded Memory Manager
(EMM),you may experience poor audio quality because your machine runs
too slow with an EMM loaded. With an EMM program running, your machine's
processing power is cut by approximately 25-40%, which can affect
Sherlock. Solution: Disable or remove the EMM from the CONFIG.SYS file
    when playing Sherlock Holmes.

Q. I GET THE MESSAGE "THERE HAS BEEN A READ ERROR ON THE CD"

A. Possibility 1. Sherlock requires a continuous-read CD ROM drive with
a 150 KB/sec data transfer rate. The "thirty" series of NEC drives
    (35, 36, 36M, 37) are what's known as a "packet-read" drive, which
will corrupt the data coming off the CD-ROM drive when used with
Sherlock Holmes. Because the drive cannot send the entire Sherlock
scene-file in one data packet, it ends up skipping or corrupting some
data, which is why the error message is displayed. Solution: You will
need to purchase a CD-ROM drive which is not packet-read. If you
have any questions about continuous-read vs. packet-read drives,
please check with the hardware manufacturer.

Possibility 2. The Sherlock CD is dirty or damaged. Solution:
Visually check the "underside" of the CD for smudges, scratches, etc.
that can cause read errors. If it's not scratched, you should be able
remove the smudges with a clean cloth.

Q. THE PROGRAM QUITS AND DISPLAYS THE MESSAGE "3 POINTERS LEFT
    ALLOCATED."

A. There aren't enough FILES allocated in the CONFIG.SYS file. Solution:
Add the statement "FILES=20" to the CONFIG.SYS file or modify the
    existing "FILES" statement.

Q. I'VE DONE EVERYTHING SUGGESTED, AND IT STILL DOESN'T WORK.

A. Please contact technical support for any new information on possible
Sherlock disc updates or problem solutions through the methods listed
    below.

BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEMS

Updates may be found at the below listed locations on the following
systems and questions may be directed to our on-line accounts (listed at
the end of this document):

America Online PC Area, "Games" Forum.

CompuServe CD-ROM Forum (CDROM) within the "DOS, Windows,
& OS/2" or "General" file libraries.
			   Multimedia Forum (MULTIMEDIA) within the
			   "Entertainment" file library.

 GEnie IBM-PC Roundtable (IBMPC), Games/Entertainment

 Creative Labs BBS 408-428-6660 (2400)

 MediaVision Support BBS 510-770-0527 (Main)

 Toy Store BBS 408-432-6061 (2400)
			   408-432-6062 (2400)
			   408-432-6089 (9600)

In all areas, look for a file mentioning "Sherlock Holmes" and, where
possible, search for a file using the keyword "SHERLOCK" or "ICOM".

Before downloading an update, check the description for it's Volume and
Version information. Then verify what volume and version of Sherlock Holmes
you're currently using, to make certain that the update you're downloading
hasn't already been included on your CD.

If you're uncertain what version of Sherlock Holmes you have, look on the
face of the CD below the "platform" information (MS-DOS, Macintosh, etc.).
Listed there is the Volume and Version numbers of your CD.

Downloading an earlier version of the software will not solve any
problems, since each revision to Sherlock Holmes includes the patches that
were in the previous versions. Similarly, downloading an update for another
Volume of Sherlock Holmes will not help, since the update will only work
with the data files for it's specific volume.
