First used in 1935, the Char-B1 Medium Tank served the French for several years. Of special note were its ability to carry heavy armaments: a
47mm gun, a 75mm gun, and a machine gun. It had good armor protection in
the hull and turret, and unique, self-sealing gas tanks.
The 47mm gun was good as an anti-tank weapon and could defeat most German tanks
in 1940. The 75mm gun was a howitzer and useful primarily against soft targets like
infantry.
