With the appearance of Allied tanks like the T-34, the Germans' need for a
better tank became crucial. The Pz-IVf2s was the replacement tank for the
aging Pz-III series. While its armor protection was average, the biggest
improvement was its long barreled 75L43mm cannon. This weapon had a decent
chance to penetrate the Russian T-34's armor. Over 1,000 Pz-IVf2s were
produced, and eventually the Pz-IV series became the German Army's main
battle tank for the rest of the war.
