
The P-40 Warhawk and the P-39 Aircobra were the principal U.S. Army
fighters when the U.S. entered the war. The P-40 was the first mass-
produced fighter plane in the U.S.; over 13,500 were built between 1940
and 1944. Armament in the later P-40 consisted of two .50 caliber machine
guns and the capacity to carry several small bombs.
