The M-18 Hellcat tank destroyer was a completely new design, intended to be
as light and as fast as possible. With light armor and the 76mm gun of the
Sherman, it proved to be the fastest tracked vehicle of World War II. One
drawback, however, was that it had an open turret, and was more
vulnerable to HE fire. The 76mm was sufficent to deal with a Pz-IV but still
had trouble going against a Tiger or Panther.
