The BT-7's (Bistrokhodny Tank) design was based on the weak-armor-sided BT-5,
but was redesigned with front armor, a new turret, more machineguns, and was
capable of faster speed. Introduced in stages starting in 1935, the BT-7
still was based on a design which quickly became inferior, but paved the
way to the popular T-34. The tank carried a 47mm anti-tank gun and could
handle most early war German tanks. The drawback was that it was poorly
armored.
