
The P-40 Warhawk and the P-39 Aircobra were the principal U.S. Army
fighters when the U.S. entered the war. The Warhawk was the first mass-
produced fighter plane in the U.S.; over 13,500 were built between 1940
and 1944. Armament in the later Warhawks consisted of two .50 caliber
machine guns as well as the capacity to carry small bombs.
