THE CAPTURE OF BALTA August 4th, 1941 -

The small town of Balta controlled the local road net northeast of Odessa.
Assigned to take this crucial town were the German 744th Engineer Regiment and
units of the Rumanian 6th Infantry Division. The Russians had fortified the
town and even had two KV1 heavy tanks. Despite heavy resistance and the
presence of the heavy tanks, the Axis forces eventually forced their way into
Balta.
