PRIMASOLE BRIDGE July 14th, 1943 -

On the night of July 14th, the British paratroopers of the 1st Airborne
Division assaulted the Primasole Bridge. This bridge, located on the Simeto
River in Sicily, was vital to Allied plans. Only 295 paratroopers landed
anywhere near the bridge. Yet, the British still managed to grab the bridge
and drive off the early counter attacks mounted by the Italians and Germans.
But on the 14th the Germans made a much more serious effort to take back the
bridge. Lacking heavy weapons, the British were forced to withdraw.
