ROAD TO MESSINA August 8th, 1943 -

By early August both the U.S. 7th Army under Patton and the British
8th Army under Montgomery were racing towards the city of Messina. Spoiling
their race were the skillful delaying actions fought by the withdrawing
German forces. The U.S. 3rd Infantry Division was driving up the coastal road
towards the town of Santa Agata. Once again the Americans came under heavy
fire and what followed was typical of the Sicily campaign.
