PEGASUS BRIDGE June 6th, 1944 -

During the predawn hours of June 6th, 1944, D Company of the 2nd Oxfordshire
Light Infantry swooped down to capture the key bridges over the Orne River
and Caen Canal. The objective was to seize the bridges and "Hold until
relieved." A combination of good luck and skillful piloting allowed all six
platoons to land within a few hundred yards of their target. Within minutes
Major Howard's men captured the key bridges. It was only a matter of time
before the Germans responded with a counter attack. This came in the form of
2 tanks and a company of infantry from the nearby town of Le Port. Steady
nerves and skill stopped the Germans cold. Major Howard's men would "Hold
until relieved."
