STEMMING THE RED TIDE January 12th, 1945 -

The end was near. Both the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts of the Red Army were
driving towards Budapest. Soon the city was surrounded and the defenders were
hoping for relief. The Germans staged one relief attempt until the Soviets
began assaulting the city in earnest. The defenders were a mixed bunch of
Hungarians and Germans. Everything from exhausted infantry formations to
university students.
