CLASH IN THE DESERT May 28th, 1939 -

In May of 1939, Russia and Japan entered into a border dispute over Outer
Mongolia and Manchuria. While the land was of little value to either side,
the issue of control finally led to open conflict. On May 28th, units of the
Japanese 23rd Division crossed the border into Russian territory. The
Japanese had, unwisely, left their flanks exposed and the Russians were
quick to take advantage. As the Japanese column trudged down the road, the
sound of tanks on the move got louder and louder.
