NETWORK PLAY PROBLEMS

NETWORK MODE

Network play is only available under
Windows95 as of this release. In order to
create a network game, the host's machine
must have a game disc present in their
CD-ROM drive; clients who wish to join a net
game may also have their own game disc, or
they may install the "Remote" version of the
game using the original game disc (see
"Remote Play" section below).

PROTOCOLS

While other DirectPlay protocols may appear
in the list of network servers in the network
setup screen, THE NEED FOR SPEED(TM)
SPECIAL EDITION only supports 100% IPX
compatible network environments, using
protocols such as "WinSock IPX for
DirectPlay". It is advised that you contact
your network administrator if you are
uncertain if a protocol listed is IPX
compatible.

FRAME RATE

Frame-rate of the game can be compromised
during network play when a player's computer
is slower than the others. In a networked
environment, other factors can also come into
account, such as the actual speed of the
network itself, as well as any other activity
taking place on the network (ie: other users
transferring large amounts of data can slow
down the network itself as well as network
games).

HOST VS. CLIENT

We advise that in an network environment
containing machines with varying speeds, the
fastest machine should act as the game's
host, and slower machines should be clients
which connect to that host's game. Also see
the "Gameplay Performance Problems" section
in the Technical Reference card.

REMOTE PLAY

The "Remote" version of the game was designed
to enable users without their own game disc
to join network games with their friends. All
potential clients must obtain the game disc,
run the installation program on the client
machine, and select "Remote" for "Install
Type" (145MB of disc space is required).
Remote cannot be used to play stand-alone
games - that requires the game disc.

TOURNAMENT STANDINGS

During any tournament, you can see the
current standings by clicking the left mouse
button or pressing SPACE over the
Tournament game mode icon.

OTHER PROBLEMS

If you encounter any problems during the
install process which are not covered in the
game manual, technical reference card, or in
the Installation program help files, please
contact Electronic Arts' Technical Support
Department(see the Installation program's
help section titled "Getting Technical
Support" for details).
